The Mathematics of Skittles

So, my sister is here with me for a visit.
We decided to go to the Indian store for a couple of things and while there I purchased a bag of skittles.
Skittles Crazy Cores to be exact.
A delightful combination of strawberry watermelon, cherry lemonade, blue raspberry lemon, mango peach and melon berry.
Pretty colors, green, pink, blue, red and orange.
I opened the package and began passing them around.
We sampled and each one of us had a favorite.
Then the game began.
Neil says,"I cannot look at these without seeing numbers".
"Numbers", I say. "How interesting".
He then preceded to show me how he will choose which skittle to eat next.
"It's all in the numbers. They must be symmetrical".
My sister then tells us that when she is confronted with an out numbered color of skittles she will select a skittle from the "odd" color of candies therefore creating and even playing field for the next round. And she says, she always eats red & purple together.
They just simply have to be eaten together.
Somewhere in the back of my mind I hear the tune to a commercial for Smarties.
"When you eat your Smarties, do you eat the red one last....."I do not eat enough candy to form some kind of game plan or maybe it has to do with the fact that I never did understand Mathematics however, I find the whole concept rather fascinating.
I have always stuck with the flavors I liked.
Orange not lime.
Strawberry not raspberry.
No lemon, no cherry.
Simple and to the point but....
Now I am wondering.
Does everyone have a systematic way for eating their candies?

I never knew eating Skittles could be so complicated. Maybe I am just out of touch...do not buy candies. Sounds like you guys had a lot of fun with one bag of candies???
